The WISE Awards 2013 is a fantastic opportunity to recognise the successes of women in STEM, and this year there has been a record number of nominations across the ten categories.

The WISE Awards 2013 will be held on the evening of 14 November, in the inspirational setting of the Science Museum itself. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards by WISE’s Royal Patron, HRH The Princess Royal.

The WISE Campaign promotes female talent in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields, and is passionate about connecting young people with role models, promoting networking events, and providing unconscious bias training and consultancy across the UK.

The WISE Awards developed from the previous “Women of Outstanding Achievement Award”, which began in 2006. Currently in its second year running, the WISE Awards 2013 is set to be the biggest celebration yet, with around 400 guests from a diverse range of STEM backgrounds in academia, business and media set to attend.

In addition, this year the Media Award has been introduced to the 2013 WISE Awards. This award aims to celebrate the dedicated outreach of science communicators across a breadth of modern topics, alongside the Girl Award, for girls and young women who have demonstrated an exceptional potential within STEM in both their studies and their personal interests.

Why are we all wearing jeans today?

Jeans for Genes Day is an annual fundraising event that takes place to improve the lives of individuals and families affected by genetic disorders. AND to show our support for this fantastic cause, we are all wearing our jeans today!

What are genetic disorders?

Genetic disorders are caused by an alteration in DNA. This may mean that either a gene or several genes are missing, repeated or in the wrong order. Altered genes can affect a child's senses, movement, ability to learn or appearance.

Did you know? Individually, genetic disorders are rare but together they affect 1 in 25 children born in the UK - that's more than 30,000 babies each year. Their associated health problems mean that genetic disorders are the biggest cause of death of children aged 14 years and under.

For more information about genetic disorders please visit www.jeansforgenes.org.

I will be taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society Epping Forest Memory Walk on Sunday 15 September 2013.

Dementia is an issue close to the hearts of many of us here at HRS. Dementia can be extremely difficult to live with and sadly, it also has an affect on close friends and family. This Sunday I will be heading through the leafy paths of the beautiful Essex Woodland and taking part in the Alzheimer’s Society Epping Forest Memory Walk.

Memory Walk in partnership with Bupa Care Homes is a series of fundraising walking events taking place across England, Wales and Northern Ireland every September, all raising money to provide vital support to people living with dementia and help our research to find a cure for the future.

The term 'dementia' describes a set of symptoms that include loss of memory, mood changes, and problems with communication and reasoning. There are many types of dementia. The most common are Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. Dementia is progressive, which means the symptoms will gradually get worse.

Every September, people bring their friends an family along to an amazing fundraising event - Alzheimer’s Society Memory Walk. Some people walk to be amongst others who truly understand. Others walk to remember loved ones. All walk with one goal: fighting dementia www.memorywalk.org.uk.

For every walker who takes part in the Bupa Memory Mile, Bupa Care Homes will donate £2.50 to Alzheimer’s Society. Memory Walk 2012 raised over £1.4million for the first time ever, hopefully this year that record will be beaten!

HRS  is a specialist recruitment company dedicated to the Science, Technology and Engineering sectors. We are passionate and committed to supporting scientific research that helps to assist in the improvement and quality of life for all. This is our key vision and supporting key charities such as Alzheimer’s in any way we can is something we will always strive to do.
