What Does a QC Analyst Do?

QC analyst

A quality control analyst - or QC analyst for short - is responsible for testing products to ensure that they meet certain criteria. Another common name for this role is 'quality control associate'.

According to the job description of a QC analyst, you will need to ensure that products are of suitable quality and that they are uniform enough to meet a set standard.

This might sound relatively simple, but there are a wide range of different duties that you might be expected to undertake as part of your QC analyst job.

What are the responsibilities of a QC analyst?

As with any professional role, the specific responsibilities and job description of a QC analyst can vary from one job listing to the next.

QC analysts are found in many different sectors, but since we specialise in life science recruitment here at HRS, let's take a look at some examples of typical duties for a QC analyst in the pharmaceutical industry:

  • Inspecting a range of different works to detect defects and maintain quality standards

  • Sample analysis using HPLC, GC, and other analytical techniques to GMP standards

  • Co-operating with the rest of your team to investigate, report, and resolve abnormalities

  • The use of Empower (CDS) software to capture and process data

  • Following standard pharmacopoeia at an intermediate level for FTIR, NMR, Karl Fischer, etc.

  • Working with a variety of dosage forms (e.g. oral, solid, sterile, aseptic)

  • Preparing analytical reagents, cultures and media for general laboratory use

  • Ensuring that health and safety best practices are observed within the lab

  • Ensuring that any waste materials are processed, recorded, and properly disposed of

  • Operating and maintaining laboratory equipment effectively

  • Supporting the laboratory cleaning validation process
