At the start of this decade, progress was slow. Just 6 countries had laws prohibiting discrimination in the workplace based on sexual orientation and gender identity. Fast forward this has increased to at least 116 countries.
These rights allow those in the LGBTQ+ community to progress in their careers, where so many before them may not have had the opportunity. Pride month holds so much importance for reasons such as this.
Although, despite this progress, there is still a long way to go. Many LGBTQ+ people still experience discrimination and fear of coming out at work. This can have a knock-on effect on progression at work. That's why it is so important for employers to create an inclusive environment for all their employees, regardless of sexual orientation and gender identity.
At HRS, inclusivity is key. We have an ED&I committee who support the education, inclusion, and improvement of our workforce. This month, their focus is of course, Pride. We have several activities taking place for the workforce, including an educational day, sharing inspirational stories from members of the LGBTQ+ community and information on inclusive language. We will be laying on pride themed cocktails as part of an in-house pride festival to kick-start the awareness month.
Let's all continue to celebrate Pride Month and the progress that has been made so far! Find out more here about the LGBTQ+ Foundation.
