What Is NGS Technology?

NGS stands for next-generation sequencing, which is a technology that sequences DNA and RNA to determine the order of nucleotides in genomes or other targeted regions. NGS technologies go beyond the capacity of traditional DNA sequencing in order to answer today’s increasingly complex genomics questions.

NGS has become an everyday tool that has revolutionised both the speed and cost of DNA sequencing, making it more accessible to labs of all sizes.

Read on to learn more about the role of a NGS Scientist.

Applications of NGS Technology:

Next-generation sequencing technology has changed the type of questions scientists can ask and answer. For example, NGS allows researchers to:

  • Sequence millions of DNA fragments simultaneously

  • Rapidly sequence whole genomes

  • Study the human microbiome

  • Identify novel pathogens

  • Sequence cancer samples to study rare somatic variants, tumour subclones and more

NGS Scientist: Key Duties & Responsibilities

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) scientists have many duties and responsibilities, including:

  • Processing and managing NGS data analysis

  • Developing data processing pipelines for genomics and other lab testing assays

  • Assessing the quality of nucleic acids

  • Using online data management systems to track samples and document lab work

  • Designing, executing and analysing experiments using established protocols

  • Supporting research projects using genomic technologies

  • Facilitating the launch of new innovative products and technologies

What Qualifications Are Required?

  • A relevant degree in Life Sciences, ranging from BSc to PhD level, with proven experience in molecular biology assays and NGS.

  • Hands-on expertise in targeted NGS assay workflows and familiarity with various sequencing technologies.

  • Demonstrated industry experience in developing and tech transferring in IVDs under ISO13485.

NGS Scientist is one of the many roles we recruit for here at HRS. Enquire today or click the link below to browse the latest life science vacancies in the UK, EU and USA.
