More Women Than Ever Before Are Pursuing Careers in Science!

women in science

A recent study shows that more women than ever are starting careers in science, which is great news for the science industry!

When you look at the scientific landscape for the past 20 years, it's evident that more women than ever are starting scientific research careers globally. At the start of the century in 2000, only 33% of researchers starting their publishing careers were women. In recent years, this figure has risen to 40%.

Are women progressing in their science careers?

As part of the study, researchers decided to track publication records over time to see whether males or females progressed further in their careers. Interestingly, they discovered that men were more likely to continue publishing papers throughout their careers than women, although the difference was not hugely significant.

It is common knowledge that there are fewer women progressing into senior science roles than men, however, women are only slightly less likely to continue publishing papers than men are. Let's take a look at the figures to get a better understanding...

Research shows that 54% of women who started publishing scientific papers in 2000 had stopped contributing papers after 15 years, as opposed to 52% of men.

What research careers are women pursuing?

Between 2000 and 2010 there has been a sharp increase in women choosing careers in science, but which scientific careers are women actively pursuing? Here are some fields that have become more popular choices for women:

  • Medicine
  • Dentistry
  • Environmental Science
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Earth and Planetary Sciences
