The IRP (Institute of Recruitment Professionals) Awards took place at The Royal Lancaster Hotel in London last week. Hosted by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, the IRP Awards are the most prestigious in the recruitment industry, so we at Hyper Recruitment Solutions were thrilled to be shortlisted for no fewer than 4 awards:

  • Best Newcomer (Sariat Adeniji)
  • Best Temp Consultant (Georgia Smith)
  • Best CSR Practitioner
  • Best Company to Work for (Up to 50 Employees)

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the annual IRP Awards, and it was the most competitive Awards yet, with more applications than ever and a panel of industry experts - led by Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation - judging each category.

Imagine how elated we were, then, when we learned that Hyper Recruitment Solutions had won the Best Company to Work for (Up to 50 Employees) award!

Additionally, HRS were 'Highly Commended' in the Best Newcomer category, and we were also recognised for our social engagement in the run-up to the event - we even won 'Selfie of the Year', an extra bit of fun from the IRP that recognised the more light-hearted side of our industry. About the Event

The IRP Awards event was a great chance to recognise excellence in the recruitment sector and spend an evening amongst some of the best and brightest the UK has to offer. If you work within the recruitment industry and you've never attended or entered the Awards before, we would certainly recommend it - not only is it a great opportunity to showcase your talent, it's also a fantastic chance to upskill yourself in the marketplace.

Earlier this month, we held our annual networking event at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London. You can read all about it here - the evening's discussion primarily focused on the quality and regulatory challenges that UK pharma/biotech companies will need to consider after Brexit.

We are proud to say that this event was extremely well received. As we mentioned previously, 97% of attendees rated the evening as either 'excellent' or 'very good', and our guest speakers all enjoyed a warm reception on the night.

John Johnson

Among those speakers was John Johnson (pictured above). John is the Vice President of Pharma Biotech at NSF, the public health and safety organisation. Here's what he had to say afterwards:

HRS: Who Are We?

On the 11th October 2018, we at Hyper Recruitment Solutions held our annual networking event at the Royal Society of Chemistry in London. We brought together 120 of our associates from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors to discuss the changes we can expect to see in quality and regulatory systems following Brexit.

On arrival, guests were given the chance to network and get to know each other. HRS founder Ricky Martin then addressed the room, welcoming the guests and outlining the purpose of the event: to acknowledge, predict and discuss changes that professionals in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries can expect before and after the UK's exit from the European Union next year.

Our host for the evening was media entrepreneur Mike Soutar, who interviewed Ricky when he was a contestant on The Apprentice - Mike did a great job of warming up the crowd with his recollections of this experience!

The keynote speeches from John Johnston and Bob Clay were followed by a Q&A, during which John, Bob and Ricky took questions from attendees.

Key Takeaways from the Event

  • After initial discussion about the uncertainty that Brexit has brought to the sector, the room agreed that the pharma / biotech industries make life-saving medicines, and that this must and will continue. Ensuring this will require agility in our processes and positivity in our mindset.

  • Despite changes in the EMA, the UK will remain a hub for pharma / biotech talent and this should be celebrated. We cannot be so negative as to put people off the sector.

  • To support the future of the sector, we will all need to do more within our own 'outreach' programmes to inspire the next wave of STEM talent to join the sector (via schools, colleges, universities, etc).

  • Companies that are being more proactive and open to change from a quality / regulatory perspective will be in a better position post-March 2019.

As you'd expect from such an illustrious industry event, attendees had plenty of time to network at the beginning and end of the evening, and when we took a survey of those who were there, the responses were very positive indeed:

  • 97% of attendees rated the event as either 'excellent' or 'very good' overall

  • 90% of attendees rated the speakers as either 'excellent' or 'very good'

  • 90% of attendees said they would be 'extremely likely' to attend a similar HRS networking event in the future

Ricky ended the event with a positive message about everybody taking responsibility for acting as brand ambassadors for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. We must ensure that we continue to seek opportunities off the back of Brexit (as opposed to being consumed by the negatives), and remember that the sector saves lives and will continue to do so.

Lord Sugar's business partner becomes first winner of The Apprentice to reach £1m profit

  • HRS set to turn over £10m in the 2018 calendar year

  • Projected turnover for the next HRS financial year (July 2018 - June 2019) is £14m

Crowned winner of The Apprentice in 2012, and following the investment from Lord Sugar, Hyper Recruitment Solutions (HRS) was founded focusing on mid-level and senior recruitment in STEM industries globally; and today announces huge success, reaching the £1m profit mark.

HRS turned over a staggering £8m in the 12 months up to June 2018, achieving a 106% growth on profit and a 90% growth on turnover. Following on from the previous year’s 34% growth on profit and 59% on turnover. In the past 12 months alone, HRS has broken all company records on both sales and profit whilst managing to restructure and expand.

With two new locations in Manchester and Edinburgh alongside the founding company site based in Essex, the successful business now boasts 50 employees across the business. The company’s rapid expansion has resulted in a newly formed internal training academy together with focus on recruitment development, showcasing employee retention and return on investment in the first 12 months, snowballing from 30% to 80%. The expansion of staff by 50% has proved to be HRS’s most expensive, yet most successful year to date.

With continued success in mind, HRS have big plans for the next two years, looking to continue growth as the leading recruitment partner for science industries across the UK as well as a plan to focus on developing the businesses presence and offering across Europe.

Ricky Martin, CEO of Hyper Recruitment Solutions, says: “I couldn’t be prouder of the whole team at HRS who have got us to where we are today. To have grown from a company of just one back in 2012 to a business with 50 staff across 3 major UK cities, that makes a difference to so many people, is remarkable.”

Lord Sugar commented: “Investing in Ricky was a no-brainer, his understanding of the recruitment industry combined with his passion for business has resulted in the success Hyper Recruitment Solutions sees today. Being the first Apprentice winner to hit the £1m pre-tax profit mark is just the start, I know the future is bright for HRS going forward.”

HRS further plan to reinvest the business profit into talent at the business, growing their specialist workforce and continuing to provide the training and development needed to maintain their standards of employing the most professional and ethical recruiters in the industry.

Mr Martin added: “Money has always been secondary to changing lives in my eyes, however to do so and become the first winner of The Apprentice to break the £1m profit milestone in a single company year, is a huge success and I couldn’t be more thrilled!”

Making strides in the recruitment world, HRS ensures they give back to communities proving they’re not solely in it for profit. The business currently partners with charities Jeans for Genes, Alzheimer’s Society and Apps 4 Good which all make a difference to the sectors they recruit for, namely science, technology and engineering.

Mr Martin continued: “The reason Lord Sugar invested in to my business idea is because I was not just a recruiter. I was somebody who wanted to support talent in a specialist sector, which makes a real difference. It’s this passion for doing the right thing that has seen HRS go from strength to strength; and is why our financials have followed suit!”

The REC’s new Compliance Test was launched in July 2012. All new members to the REC must now pass the test to become a full member and the test will be launched for the REC’s existing members in early 2013. Ricky Martin’s company Hyper Recruitment Solutions was the first to pass the test with an impressive score of 96%. The highest score so far from any recruitment consultancy.

The Compliance Test is an online test with multiple choice questions that assesses a recruiter’s knowledge of the REC’s Code of Professional Practice and key legislation. The test must be completed within a twenty four hour period and you can stop and save your work as you go along so, that you can also attend to any other urgent business whilst you are doing the test. The test is also customised so, that you only answer questions that relate to the type of recruitment business you run eg. if you only act as a temporary recruiter you will only have to answer questions that relate to temporary recruitment. There is a range of support mechanisms in place to help members pass the test and these include workshops, a webinar and access to a “training” test before you do the actual test, which gives you both a feel for the format of the test and types of questions.

The Compliance Test is not there to catch members out but is there to assess your knowledge, help you improve your knowledge and then for the REC to provide support and guidance where it is needed. The test also shows that you are not just buying the badge by becoming an REC member but demonstrating to your clients and candidates a commitment to compliance and professional standards.
